Dry Eye

Dry Eye affects people of all ages. It is more appropriate to refer to dry eye as a ‘tear film instability’ because often people with ‘dry’ eyes complain of their eyes being very watery. Other symptoms of dry eye include blurred vision, eyes that are red, burning, gritty, scratchy or sandy. Treatment for dry eye has previously focused on the use of drops or ointments to supplement our normal tear film. Our optometrists will perform a comprehensive assessment to detect the cause of your dry eye and look at ways to treat the cause to reduce your reliance on drops.

Dry eye can be a result of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, a condition where the oil glands around the eyes are blocked. We offer different treatments to reduce the symptoms and dependance on eye drops including IPL, Intense Pulsed Light, treatment, ask your optometrist if this treatment is suitable for you.

Good Nutrition

Dry eye is another condition which can benefit from proper nutrition. Omega 3 fats are great for eye health in general, particularly the ocular surface and tear film. A diet that includes fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel) as well as healthy amounts of canola oil, olive oil and flaxseed oil can help reduce dry eye symptoms.

Macular Degeneration

The macular is the functional centre of the retina and provides us with our most fine, detailed vision. Recent eye studies have shown a number of nutrients to be essential in maintaining a healthy, fully functioning macula. These nutrients include Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Zinc and Copper.

Nutrition and Eye Health

The best foods to eat to ensure you are getting your recommended dose of these nutrients include brightly coloured fruit and vegetables like spinach, broccoli, carrots, pumpkin, oranges, blueberries, raspberries and capsicum. Our practices also stock vitamin and mineral supplements like Macutec for macular health if you’re finding it hard to get the nutrients you need through diet alone.
